Self-expression takes form in myriad wonderful ways, and artist Lauren Crabtree found her outlet for it through working with fibre. With a powerful passion for textiles and their incredible versatility when it comes to creative articulation, Lauren was able to evolve her craft-making into a business. Her shop, The Weaving Tree, offers fine handmade products that evoke a unique sense of individuality.
The Creator’s Path
Lauren’s exploration with art methods began in 2016, and since then she has created a bevy of original works utilising different methods, including wrapping, macrame, weaving, and eco-dyeing. She derives her inspiration from her surroundings and translates that appreciation through her chosen medium to create custom hair wraps, woven tapestries, and jewellery. She tries to capture the individuality of every client to ensure that what she creates will resonate with them on multiple levels.
"I see art and craft making as a process of self-discovery,” says Lauren. “Learning and creating with a skill that requires your hands teaches you so much about who you are, how you deal with emotions, and how you experience your world."
Lauren’s journey to self-discovery has led to distinctive artwork that lends itself well to those with a down-to-earth lifestyle and sense of fashion. Her hair wraps are vibrant and striking, and the jewellery she creates possesses an earthy elegance. Her love of colours, textures, and all things bohemian come across clearly in all of her work.
Proudly Handmade and Eco-Friendly
Each design featured in The Weaving Tree’s shop exhibits a unique fibre art style that is exclusively Lauren’s. Her collections are 100% handmade. What’s more, her business always takes into consideration the impact that certain materials or processes can have on the environment.
Her eco-conscious approach is a commendable one, and she elaborates by saying, “I take pride in my focus for environmentally conscious art with many of my materials being up-cycled, repurposed, ethically, and sustainably sourced. Everything I make is given the utmost love and care, making each piece uniquely special and an extension of my heart – from one home to another."
The wall hangings and tapestries Lauren makes require many long hours to complete, but the end result is worth it: highly textured, three-dimensional art that brings atmosphere and warmth to the spaces they adorn.
An Ever-Changing Process
The processes Lauren uses to create her products are constantly evolving as she discovers and experiments with new styles and techniques. Most of the time her works are born from a desire to try something different and new.
